Nowadays it is difficult to log onto social media, turn on the TV, or read a book without hearing about the importance of establishing your brand. In the business world, it is safe to say that your brand is everything; it can take you to new heights, or it can ruin you.
This is why it’s important to hit the ground running when it comes to developing your brand. Setting a strong foundation from the get-go is going to make things so much easier for you in the long run. As we all know too well… people need to know who you are, what your mission is, and what you offer. Establishing a strong brand can do all of that for you quickly!
But when you are first starting out, it is difficult to know how to build a successful brand. For me, one of the best ways to learn is to observe what other people are doing. While we never want to copy or emulate another, we can certainly take notes! And when you take a moment to look around, I’m sure you’ll begin to see some specific things that separate the amazing brands from the…..not so amazing brands.
Here are a few things I think you can do to set a strong foundation for your brand.
Be Authentic, No Matter The Cost
If there is anything I have learned about business, it would be to remain authentic in everything you do. If you are doing things just for the money or fame, then you are more likely to do things that are not in your character. This is a huge no-no in business. People work with people they like, those they feel they can trust. If you are putting a fake persona out there, sure, it may carry you a little bit; but ultimately it will catch up to you.
If you align what you are doing with your purpose, then the information you put out there will be genuine and true to you. Establishing a strong foundation for your brand and remaining authentic should be synonymous. To be honest, I don’t think you can ever build a strong personal brand without authenticity, let alone create a strong foundation.
Identify Your Mission and Align Everything With it
It’s important that you establish your mission statement as soon as possible when you go into any business; once that is clear then you can easily align everything you do with that overall vision. If your mission statement is to empower women to live a more carefree life, for example, then you can provide information that reinforces that message. I truly believe that in order to build anything of value, you will need to attach your action to purpose. Identifying your mission early on will help you do this.
Create Branded Images
The truth is, your brand encompasses a lot of things. It’s not just the philosophical things like your mission statement and purpose. It is also the physical things like your product packaging, website, and images. Everything comes together in concert to create your overall brand, so if you want to establish a great foundation; start off by creating branded images. Almost every business has a website or social media, and creating images with a specific theme is a simple but effective way to create brand recognition. Adding your logo just puts icing on the cake! I make mine in photoshop, but there are a few apps out there too that you can use!
Share Content that reinforces your message
This is also a great tip for growing your audience! Sharing valuable content of others in your industry that also support your vision is a great way to begin creating a strong brand. It also helps to establish you as an authority in your industry; if you are talking about what everyone else is talking about, you are ‘in the loop’. People will then begin to associate you with that industry and before you know it, you’ll be rocking it with the best of them!
Branding can be an elusive topic, but it doesn’t have to be this abstract thing that we can’t quite put our finger on. Especially if you stay true to yourself, everything else will fall into place.
