Hi Everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR! This is my first post for 2016 and I couldn’t be more excited for the new year and all it will bring. I sometimes can’t believe it is already here! Doesn’t it feel like 2015 went by super fast? This is the time of year for me, where everything feels brand new and fresh! I have to admit, 2015 was a little rough for me. Some of the dreams I had did not get realized or even worse, those that were did not turn out the way I had hoped. I fell short on a few goals, and misstepped on others. Overall I would say 2015 was mediocre.
But I have digressed, it is 2016 and I am about learning from the past and living in the present! Each new year is significant for me and symbolizes a revival to every unresolved situation in my life! I hope you see it the same way! For me, the end of a year is a time of much reflection and the beginning of a new calls for thoughtful planning. I have quiet a few dreams for myself, this blog, my freelance writing career and my business. I know you’ve got many plans too! I can’t wait to take this journey together as we continue to develop a sisterhood of women living in their purpose!
Now, I know the phrase “New Year Resolutions” has gotten a bad rap. I think that is because most people don’t actually stick to them! I for one am not afraid to say that I come up with new year resolutions every year. To me, it is only the natural thing to do when a new year rolls around, we all have goals and dreams in life and every new year is an opportunity to reach them. Plus, it is truly a gift that we are getting to see another year, so let’s try to remember that!
Even still, I can admit the term “New Year Resolutions” does seem a little vague and flippant. Perhaps that is another reason why people want to avoid the verbiage. I am even guilty of just saying, “I have plans” because i’m afraid that if I say “New Year Resolutions” people’s eyes will begin to gloss over.
I say all this to say that I am beyond excited for 2016, and I have my New Year Resolutions written down and ready to go! Now it’s just a matter of getting them to stick. That seems to be our major problem isn’t it? After all, why make goals if you aren’t going to meet them? I’ve written before about the way we goal set and how that may play a roll in why we have a tendency to fall off. Today, I want to expand on that and give a few tips on how we can all make our resolutions actually stick. Not just for a few months but for the entire year!
Don’t Put Too Much Pressure On Yourself
Something happens when we make a goal and write it down. It is like all of a sudden a huge weight has been placed on our shoulders. Now we actually have to do something. Now we actually have to change. That can be a little overwhelming, because change is scary and it does require a lot of effort. I am guilty of putting insurmountable pressure on myself when I set a goal or resolution. I think, If I can’t see measurable progress then it isn’t working and I’m not doing good enough. I want to challenge you not to do this! (I’m also challenging myself not to do this too). Putting a crazy amount of pressure on your progress will only stress you out and make you want to quit. It is better to take a firm but calm route. This makes me think of the tortoise and the hare story. The hare is us when we are stressed out, pushing too hard, looking for results results results! We should aim to be more like the tortoise, who may be slower…but is moving calmly and firmly towards the end goal (and eventually makes it). Even still, it is important that we do not take such a lax approach that we are not getting anything done. We still need a little bit of that firmness to make sure we are on top of things. Just don’t go overboard, don’t put to much pressure on the results!
Develop A Concise Plan
Nothing is going to happen if you don’t have a concise plan. Notice I said concise plan and not just plan. Plans are wonderful when they are thoughtfully composed, they are worthless if they just simply list off what it is you want to get done. Sure, that type of list may work when you are going grocery shopping or running errands, but when you are trying to tackle huge lifestyle changes this approach isn’t the best. You need to not only write the end goal, but also how you plan to get there. You need to create your pathway to the goal so that you know where you are headed. Think of it almost like a blueprint to your success. Of course, things will likely happen to hinder this plan but that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one. Develop a concise plan upfront, and then all you have to do is follow it, it takes a lot of the guess work out of what you are doing. It also minimizes any potential setbacks that could arise. Which leads me to my next point.
Count On Your “Failures”and Plan Ahead
You know how I feel about the word “failure“. I prefer to see them as life lessons. But still, come on….you know that chocolate cake is going to be sitting in the break room refrigerator at work. You know that when you say yes to too many projects you get flustered and your home life suffers. You know when you wake up late your whole day is messed up. Plan for your setbacks. We are only human, and to set goals without thinking ahead to potential issues is kinda silly. We are going to mess up, and that’s okay! Plan for them and you won’t be so disappointed when it happens. You can just move right along, as if you knew it was going to happen (imagine that)! Accept your potential “failures” before they occur, and it wont be a life altering event when they inevitably happen.
It is 2016 guys!! I am really over the moon. This is our chance to start fresh, to make good on our old promises (or develop new ones). This is our year to grow our businesses/careers, invest in our personal growth, and develop the lifestyle we have always dreamed of! Take advantage of this time, because at the end of 2016, you want to be able to say, “I did that!”
So…what are some of your New Year Resolutions?!? I would love to hear them in the comments below. Also, don’t forget to sign up for my monthly newsletter to get updates on everything that will be happening (which will be alot :P). Thank you so much for reading!
